Everyone wants to be assigned the newest shiniest project using AI and cloud computing, and maybe even a quantum computer. But realistically speaking, shiny projects aren’t always the most important.
In fact, there is one type of a project that is perpetual “red-headed stepchild” of IT – backups and disaster recovery (DR).
You’re #CuriousAboutData, so read on!
Now, if all you’re doing is making a few custom shoes a month and have everything written down in a notebook, then you don’t need to know about DR. BTW, there is absolutely nothing wrong with making a few custom shoes a month. I used to know a guy like that a couple of blocks from the Penn station. Trust me, he was doing fine.
But I digress. For those of us who depend on computers to make a living, backups and DR have a special meaning.
So, why is it that most companies neglect their backups? I guess some psychology student can make that study into a PhD thesis. At BitWise, it’s a simple matter of discipline. It’s like brushing your teeth. You know you have to do it, but don’t always feel like it. It is also like brushing your teeth in a sense that if you develop good habits early on, it becomes harder to be lazy.
To be fair, it doesn’t help that proper DR setup and documentation can be challenging, and for some systems involve significant time commitment from business users. After all, everything comes down to funding. In theory, you can survive a disaster without skipping a beat – but in reality – most companies have to make tough decisions.
- Which systems will have to stay up no matter what?
- Are you going to provide an alternative location or is all access going to be remote?
- What happens to “Tier-2” systems, what’s the expectation for their recovery?
- And of course, the toughest question of them all – is there anything that is never going to be recovered?
